Marketing in the digital age can easily become overwhelming and all consuming. Trust me. I know. It is easy to start looking at things and get overwhelmed. How do I run my Facebook, website, Twitter, Instagram, Swarm, Yelp Page and Google account all at the same time? And on top of that keep everything consistent?
I like to encourage small business owners to narrow their focus. If you try to do it all you will never get anything you love done about your business. Isn't that why you work for yourself in the first place? If you are going to take a do it yourself strategy, I would recommend trying to focus on a select few things. If you want your website to be your focal point, start a blog and then post links to the blog on your social media accounts. That kills two birds with one stone. More of a Facebooker? No problem, just make sure you use images that will translate well to Instagram so that your crossposts look native to that social media platform.
While keeping all of this in mind, I would remind you to try and stick with what you are good at. A photographer should have a much better Instagram while a graphic designer would probably want to put their efforts into a killer website to show off their portfolio, and a restauranteur might want to put all their eggs in the Facebook basket to promote upcoming special events. Marketing is never a one size fits all strategy.
